Bariatric is a term, which refers to the area of medicine that focuses on the causes, prevention and treatment of obesity.

Obesity is currently one of the most advancing medical issues being faced today, with over 60% of Australian adults and an average of 25% of Australian children placed in the overweight or obese classification.

This classification comes from calculating the Body Mass Index of an individual. Having a BMI of 25 or more indicates being overweight, with a BMI of over 30 indicating obesity.

There are a number of ways that weight can be managed, through diet planning and physical exercise, extending to include more invasive procedures involving gastric surgery to reduce the size of the stomach.

Long term excess weight carrying can cause on-going health implications for the individual, further than just carrying extra fatty deposits around the body. Research has linked being overweight or obese to a number of chronic health issues including coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, diabetes, gallstones, gout, cancer and arthritis.

Due to the nature of carrying excess weight across the body, the ankle, knee and hip joints can experience accelerated deterioration and wear resulting in chronic pain and reduced mobility.  We have a number of products that can be used to assist with weight bearing and ensure that the individual can undertake everyday tasks in the most practical way ensuring quality of life.
