Grab Bars

Grab bars are designed to assist with transferring to and from the toilet.  They may also offer fall prevention assistance in the shower or bathtub. Although most commonly found in hospitals and aged care facilities, they are also beneficial in the homecare environment.

Grab bars are safety devices designed to enable a person to have something to hold onto to minimise a slip or fall. They also assist by maintaining balance, reducing fatigue while standing and take some weight while transferring.

When positioned next to a toilet, they may aid in the wheelchair transfer to the toilet seat and back to the wheelchair. They are also of use to assist people who have difficulty lowering themselves down or rising to a standing position. They can also be of use for balance-related conditions.

When used in a shower or bathtub, these grab rails help to maintain balance while standing or manoeuvring, assist in transferring into and out of the enclosure, and generally help to mitigate slips and falls.

Grab bars are regularly used with other equipment to improve safety. A shower chair positioned near a grab rail will assist with fall prevention. When placed next to a toilet, a toilet seat raiser may complement the rail.

Suction grab bars also attach to the wall with the use of suction cups. These sturdy yet portable bars can easily be attached and removed from without damaging the wall or requiring any permanent fixture into the wall. It is essential to check the suitability of the intended location before attempting to attach or use this type of rail.
