Parkinson's Disease

There are over 70,000 Australians living with this condition. 65 years is the average age of diagnosis, although younger individuals can begin showing symptoms, in which the disease is referred to as Young Onset Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s Disease affects the production of dopamine within the brain that acts as a neurotransmitter and is responsible for passing messages between cells. The disease is caused by the decline in the production of dopamine, resulting in difficulty of controlling movement, and can have a broader impact of other systems including cognition, bowel movements and smell.

Parkinson’s Disease is labelled as a ‘movement disorder’ and is understood to be progressive, eventually affecting non-motor functions including memory, sleep and in some cases causing chronic pain.

Some of the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease can include:

Impaired balance, Tremors or shaking, rigid muscles causing changes to speech, loss of automatic reflexes, changes to writing, slowing of movements (Bradykinesia).

There is currently no standard laboratory test for Parkinson’s such as a blood test etc. Therefore, it is very important that if you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of Parkinson’s that you see a specialist neurologist immediately. The specialist will then be able to evaluate based on medical history and physical symptoms.
