Motor Neurone Disease

Motor Neurone Disease is a disease that results in the nerve cells (neurones) within the brain to rapidly degenerate and die. These nerve cells are responsible for controlling the muscles that allow us to speak, breathe, swallow and move our limbs. The requirements of those affected by Motor Neurone Disease are varied and become increasingly complex throughout the duration of the patient’s life.  We have selected from our product range items that we believe can assist you or your loved one in overcoming some of the daily challenges presented by Motor Neurone Disease.

Motor Neurone Disease

Motor neuron disease (MND) is a group of progressive neurological disorders that affect the nerve cells (motor neurons) in the brain and spinal cord that control muscle movement. MNDs cause the motor neurons to degenerate and die, leading to muscle weakness, wasting, and, eventually, the inability to move or communicate.

The most common form of MND is Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS causes progressive muscle weakness and difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing. Other forms of MND include Progressive bulbar palsy (PBP), Progressive muscular atrophy (PMA), and Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS).

The cause of MND is not fully understood, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. There is currently no known cure for MND, and the disease is ultimately fatal. However, treatments are available to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. These include medications to help with muscle spasms and cramps and to slow the progression of the disease, speech and physical therapy to help with communication and mobility and respiratory support for those with difficulty breathing.

It’s important to note that MND is a rapidly progressive disease, and the rate of progression varies greatly from person to person. A multidisciplinary approach is essential for the care of individuals with MND, including support and counselling for the patient and their family.
