Spina Bifida

Patient Handling provides a range of equipment suitable to assist those with spina bifida

Spina Bifida

Spina bifida occurs when a baby’s backbone (spine) does not develop correctly during development. As a result, the spinal cord and its branching nerves might be damaged. The term “spina bifida” derives from Latin and means “split” or “opened” spine. Spina bifida is a developmental disorder caused by a combination of genes and environment. It tends to occur early in pregnancy (between the 4th and 8th weeks) due to both genetic and environmental factors.

There is a link between Spina Bifida and folate (folic acid) intake before and during pregnancy. Folic acid is essential for the growth of a developing fetus. Women who are trying to get pregnant are often recommended to take folic acid tablets. In fact, taking folic acid supplements reduces about 70% of cases. Children with Spina Bifida may require various amounts of assistance to achieve objectives in their lives, depending on their particular skills. Some symptoms of this illness include lower limb weakness, altered skin sensitivity bladder and bowel control, hydrocephalus and learning difficulties.
