Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, progressive neurological disorder affecting the central nervous system (CNS), which comprises the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. MS is caused by the immune system mistakenly attacking the protective covering (myelin) surrounding nerve fibres in the CNS. This damage disrupts the normal flow of electrical impulses along the nerves, leading to various symptoms. Patient Handling provides a range of equipment suitable to assist those with Multiple Sclerosis.

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling brain and spinal cord disease that primarily affects women. The immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibres in MS, resulting in communication problems between your brain and the rest of your body.

Multiple sclerosis can happen at any age. However, it is commonly diagnosed among people between 20 and 40. The average lifespan following a multiple sclerosis diagnosis is 25 to 35 years. Secondary problems linked with immobility, chronic urinary tract infections, and restricted eating and breathing are all potential causes of death in people with MS.

Symptoms of MS can vary significantly from person to person and can include: numbness or weakness in the limbs, especially on one side of the body, difficulty with coordination and balance, muscle spasms and stiffness, problems with vision, such as blurred vision or colour distortion, fatigue, and problems with speech and swallowing.

MS’s cause is unknown, but it is thought to be an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. It is also believed that the condition may have a genetic component.

There is currently no cure for MS, but treatments are available to help manage symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. These include medications that reduce inflammation and slow the progression of the disease, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.
It’s important to note that MS is a chronic condition that requires ongoing management and care. With the proper treatment and support, individuals with MS can lead fulfilling lives.
